Christmas Charity Event 2024

On 21 December 2024 we filled a Minecraft server with our community, streamed it live on Twitch and played custom-built minigames for a whole evening. Viewers could change the games as they were being played by donating, and every dollar went to Best Friends Animal Society.

The night

Players joined one server and moved between minigames as a group, building points across the evening, while the stream showed the live leaderboard, the donation total and giveaways worth thousands of dollars.

Best Friends Animal Society works to end the killing of cats and dogs in US shelters. Donations made during the event were triple-matched.

Donations that change the game

Each minigame had three donation tiers, shown on stream. Smaller donations gave a small twist, and the biggest ones could tip a whole round. In Paint Wars, $1 to $15 put every brush on rapid fire, and $36 or more wiped the map clean. In Avalanche, a top-tier donation switched on hard mode and PvP.

It turned watching into playing: viewers had a direct, visible effect on the game, and the charity got the money.

Built in the open

The server plugin that ran every game is open source. Before the event we asked the community for minigame ideas, map changes and lobby games, and anyone whose idea made it in got an NPC in the lobby on the night.

Final podium: ToaztyXD (1,158 points), EsotericEnderman (1,139) and Slohth (1,039).
